The Vacuum Cleaner, A History

Creator: Carroll Gantz | Social Science - 2012-09-21

C.E.P.'s Turboduster, in fact, was so identical that its dirt container fit perfectly on a B86D Dustbuster. ... Basically, it was a Dirt Devil handheld vacuum with a larger fan, wider brush roller, and a handle that allowed it to be pushed over the floor.

About this book
House cleaning has been an innate human activity forever but only since the early 19th century have mechanical devices replaced the physical labor (performed mostly by women). Mechanical carpet sweepers were replaced by manual suction cleaners, which in turn were replaced by electric vacuum cleaners in the early 20th century. Innovative inventors, who improved vacuum cleaners as electricity became commonly available, made these advances possible. Many early manufacturers failed, but some, such as Bissell, Hoover, Eureka and others, became household names as they competed for global dominance with improved features, performance and appearance. This book describes the fascinating people who made this possible, as well as the economic, cultural and technological contexts of their times. From obscure beginnings 200 years ago, vacuum cleaners have become an integral part of modern household culture.

Puttin' On the Ritz, Fred Astaire and the Fine Art of Panache, A Biography

Creator: Peter Levinson | Biography & Autobiography - 2015-07-28

She told the veteran columnist Army Archerd of Variety that she was returning her own Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner to the company, "saddened that after [her father's] wonderful career, he was sold to the devil.” Robyn was quoted as saying ...

About this book
Fred Astaire defined elegance on the dance floor. With white tie, tails and a succession of elegant partners - Ginger Rogers, Cyd Charisse, Rita Hayworth, Eleanor Powell, Judy Garland and others - he created an indelible image of the Anglo bon vivant. His origins, though, were far more humble: Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Fred Astaire came from Midwestern stock that partially had its origin in the late nineteenth century Jewish communities of Austria. At first, he played second fiddle in vaudeville to his sister, Adele; however, once he learned how to tap and bought his first Brooks Brothers suit, the game changed. How did he transform himself from a small town Nebraska boy into the most sophisticated man ever to dance across a dance floor? In this comprehensive new book about the life and artistry of Fred Astaire, Peter Levinson looks carefully at the entirety of Astaire's career from vaudeville to Broadway to Hollywood to television. He explores Astaire's relationships with his vivacious dance partners, his friendship with songwriters like George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and his relationship with choreographers like Hermes Pan to discover how Astaire, in effect, created his elegant persona. Astaire put his mark on the Hollywood musical, starting his career at RKO and then moving to MGM. From his long list of films, certain classics like "Swing Time", "Top Hat", "Royal Wedding" and "The Bandwagon" revolutionized the presentation of dance on film; but, he also revolutionized the television variety special with the Emmy-Award-Winning "An Evening With Fred Astaire". For 'Puttin' on the Ritz", veteran Hollywood insider, Peter Levinson interviewed over two hundred people who worked closely with Astaire such as Debbie Reynolds, Dick Van Dyke, Artie Shaw, Bobby Short, Oscar Peterson, Mel Ferrer, Betty Garrett, Joel Grey, Arlene Dahl, Michael Kidd, Betty Comden, Onna White, Margaret Whiting, Andy Williams, and others like Quincy Jones, John Travolta, and John Williams, to provide an intimate window on to his professional as well as his personal life. His new biography of Astaire is a celebration of the great era of sophistication on Broadway and in Hollywood as seen through the life of a man who learned how to put on the Ritz and become America's premiere song-and-dance-man: Fred Astaire.

    Good Enough for Light Messes

4/5 Kangaroo Paw - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Dirt Devil SD20000RED Simpli-Stik Lightweight Bagless Stick Vacuum - Corded (Kitchen) The Simpli-Stik is pretty much what I paid for--a no-frills, super light-weight vacuum that can pick up glitter off of a carpeted floor. I live in a 900-square-foot little house with wood floors in every room except the living room, so I didn't want to buy an expensive vacuum that I would rarely use. I take care of the wood with a Swiffer easily enough, and the Simpli-Stik is similar in weight and maneuverability. The suction is so-so, but good enough for hair and loose glitter and such. It can pick up some larger objects, if they're light. It would not be strong enough to pick up anything viscous or anything stuck to a hard surface. It's supposed to be a 3-in-1, but really I think its best setup is with the long blade attachment, then as a rolling vacuum, then as a dust-buster, January 9, 2015

Great little vacuum for small spaces!

I got this vacuum on one of those Black Friday deals, and wasn't expecting much, since it was so cheap, & the box was so light. When I opened it, and it went together like a lego toy, I was skeptical. But it's amazing!! It's never going to be your only vacuum if you have a big house (the wheel base is small, so you'd be doing a lot of walking back & forth), but if you have a little apartment, or want to keep a seperate vacuum upstairs, or in different rooms of your house, this vacuum is perfect for that! It's basically a hand-held vac, that has a detachable stick-handle, vacuum/wheel base, and crevice tool. Unlike the cordless hand-vacs, it doesn't lose power after 30 seconds, because it's electric. The crevice tool works great, and it's as light weight as one of those kids' toy vacuums. Also, when I emptied it (you will have to empty it pretty much every time you use it, but what do you expect?) I was shocked at how much dirt was in it- I'd just vacuumed with my expensive... 5/5 stefany9579 (Olympia, WA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil SD20000RED Simpli-Stik Lightweight Bagless Stick Vacuum - Corded (Kitchen) I got this vacuum on one of those Black Friday deals, and wasn't expecting much, since it was so cheap, & the box was so light. This review is from: Dirt Devil SD20000RED Simpli-Stik Lightweight Bagless Stick Vacuum - Corded (Kitchen) This was probably the most awesome Christmas gift I could have ever given my 4 year old. She wanted a vacuum like mommy's. I looked at all of the toy vacuums and some how came across this beauty. The toy vacuums cost more and did less than this little dirt devil. It is the perfect height and weight for her. Instead of pretending to vacuum, she actually is vacuuming. WIN! WIN!, March 10, 2015

This Vacuum Cleaner Really Sucks (In A Good Way)

I was skeptical about a Dirt Devil vacuum, as I had one years ago that was a total piece of junk. It was poorly engineered, and it had very little suction power. So, it was with trepidation that I opened this when it was delivered. The first thing that I noticed right out of the box was the ease with which it could be assembled. Many vacuums come out, and you need tools, an engineering degree and quite a bit of time. This only required inserting the handle and turning a knob to the locked position. Easy and ready to go! Prior to using it the first time, I also checked on how easily the filters could be washed/changed and how easy it would be to dump the collection bucket. All were well engineered and were easy to locate, remove and reinstall. The next test was to check the power of the unit. We have two cats…one a normal short hair who sheds an average amount, and the other a white, medium long hair that sheds pounds of fur a day. My wife had cleaned the... 5/5 Frederick S. For a reasonable price, the reliable old Dirt Devil keeps doin' what it has been doing for ages

The Sharks and the Dysons of this world have revolutionized the vacuum cleaner, leaving merely good vacuum cleaners struggling for recognition. This Dirt Devil does not have the turning radius of the Shark or the Science Fiction lines of the Dyson, but this is a very solid, completely reliable vacuum cleaner that suffers the great flaw of working pretty much like it always has. It doesn' t feel new or familiar, and doesn't have any bells or whistles, It also doesn't offer anything especially unique or unusual. It is simply a new style old fashioned upright cleaner with the expected attachments and hoses. They vacuum carpets and, if really needed. They don't do anything unexpected even if there has been an attempt to make it look otherwise. They do what you expect it to do and do it well if not spectacularly. It will get the job done, but not much more than that. And it is all going to do this at a fraction of the cost of the Dyson or Shark. So maybe it sells to a different... 4/5 Robert Moore (Little Rock, AR USA) - See all my reviews, March 15, 2016

    Good, lightweight vacuum!!

I have had three of these lightweight dirt devil vacuums and so far this is my favorite! They haven't broken or anything, but one my mom took because she didn't want to lug around a heavy vacuum. One is at our apartment we have in another city (my husband works out of town many weeks and he actually uses the dirt devil) Now I have one for my second floor. I only have area rugs there over hardwood, so I got tired of carrying by big vacuum for that light task...this is perfect! It is strong enough that it really picks up, but it is light so I can do stairs and take it around to different rooms easily. I really like the wand so I can do under beds, draperies, and pick up little bits of stuff on the hard floor. I don't really run it on the hardwood. I think it would work but my wood is really old and I don't want the beater bar on it. And since it is upstairs, it the floors don't really get that dirty, I just use the swiffer thing for wood. The top part comes off if... 5/5 Nanciejeanne - See all my reviews, March 20, 2016

Can't beat this price point--the pros & a few minor cons

This Dirt Devil Quick Lite vacuum is what is says it is: quick & light. I'm mostly impressed with the price and the size, making this the perfect vacuum choice for the college student, those moving into their first home, and anyone else needing a "light duty", inexpensive vacuum. I don't usually do pros & cons reviews, but what the other reviewers have said is all spot on, so I'll give a quick list of my likes & dislikes on this little vacuum...PROS* Easy to assemble. One screw is included (already screwed into the vacuum's back) for easy attaching, then it's simply a matter of snapping the handle and hose into place. Voilà , you're done!* The PRICE! You can't beat this price. For those who need a decent, cheap upright vacuum, I'd definitely recommend this one.* Powerful suction. Very powerful suction. It picked up an impressive amount of dirt & dust on it's first few uses. I also own a Dyson DC24, which is very comparable in size & suction (though... 4/5 H. Great Vac for Reasonable / Realistic People in Small Homes and Apartments

Bought this as a quick replacement for my $250 Eureka that died after just one year. Let me just say right out of the gate that this is a great vacuum cleaner that is getting a bad rap here. This thing costs about $50 (or less - paid $39 for mine). It blows my mind that people are comparing it to Dysons and what not. What on earth do you expect for $50?Unboxing:First impression was that I had received a toy vacuum from Fisher Price. It's child-sized. Reminds me of that little lawnmower you give to kids. Simple assembly. People who have trouble putting these together are people who probably have trouble with any sort of coordinated hand motion, like opening a door, or using a fork/spoon.Power:Lots. This tiny vacuum is a beast. As much power as vacs in the $100–200 range. It pulled stuff out of my carpet that had to have been in there for years, missed by my Eureka. No loss of power after six months. I have a small house. Only two... 5/5 Bill - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil UD20015 Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Misc.) Powerful Cleaner

I'm disabled and I can't move around a heavy, hard to move vacuum very easily, but this Dirt Devil is a nice light weight and powerful.I have two cats and when summer comes along there is cat hair everywhere and I need to clean up around here.I had been using a rechargeable vacuum (other brand) because it was light and easy to move around but it wasn't doing the job I was hoping for, so when I saw the name Dirt Devil, I jumped at the chance to try it out because I've always heard positive things about D.D.It's very easy to put together and requires only a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screw, then position and tighten the screw holding the back panel. That's it and then everything else just pops into place, very fast and simple. As I said before, I had been using a different vacuum and it seemed to be doing an OK job, but after using the Dirt Devil, I could not believe how much was in the dirt cup after only a few minutes of use. Smaller than expected, but a good cleaner.

Despite shipping hiccups and a few cracks in the plastic which were easily repaired with a bit of duct tape, the vacuum is a great little sucker. I have a 2 bed, 2 bath apt. with 2 cats and a large dog, so I have to empty the container a couple times each room. This would be a lot better for an apartment without pets, but in the end it works really well and cleans great, so it doesn't really bother me to empty it often. The suction is pretty amazing, my roommates GF has the original DD Breeze (12 amp, non cyclonic) and this really does a better job, pushes easier, and cleans up more dirt even while only having a 10 amp motor. The tools are simple but work fine as well and the hose connects simply and sturdily. All in all its a great cheap vacuum, I would spend a bit more if I could do it over again and get a heavier duty and larger dirt container vacuum instead. That all said, if you are debating between the ~$50 vacuums, this is probably the one to get as its the latest... 2/5 Jake Smith (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews, August 31, 2012

A Video of the the Dirt Devil Breeze

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:36 MinsThe Dirt Devil Breeze Bagless Vacuum Cleaner is a powerful but lightweight upright vacuum cleaner. I have tried other Dirt Devil upright vacuum cleaners with mixed success. Dirt Devils offer a nice combination of power and value, but I have had issues with quality. The Dirt Devil Breeze seems to follow that pattern. It was easy to assemble and offer plenty of power, but I am afraid that the canister will have issues snapping (and staying) in place.Notes- - The vacuum is lightweight and can be easily lifted with one hand - Limited number of attachments - Actually, it only has one 1 attachment - the attachment for the stairs - Bagless system - all of the debris is trapped in the canister, so the Dirt Devil Breeze does not use a bag. While it does not have bag it does have a washable and reusable filter. - Assembly is simple - it requires a philips head screw driver and about 5 minutes... 4/5 CKE (USA) - See all my reviews, December 8, 2012

A Smallish Cleaner for Smallish Spaces

5/5 Oldog_Oltrix (Washington DC) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Dirt Devil Breeze Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, UD70105 (Misc.) This is a reduced-size vacuum cleaner, so the canister is smaller and has to be emptied more often. However, the cleaning performance is the equal of most larger cleaners. Their cyclonic technology really does work. This is an excellent choice for a studio apartment or one-bedroom apartment. Don't try to clean your 3-bedroom house with it. Wrong tool for the job. It's made of plastic. It's well-made, but you have to treat it with respect.Buy extra belts, and then remember where you put them. Sooner or later, something will get tangled in the brush roller and you will burn up a belt before you can reach the power switch. It's not a flaw, it's a vacuum cleaner fact of life.I spent a lot of hours studying vacuum cleaners and reading reviews. You can save a lot of work by trusting me. Or, do it the hard way. Whatever.
